FAQ

How do you split a bill with tip between people?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide by the number of people. For example, an $80 bill with an 18% tip is $80 + $14.40 = $94.40 total, split 4 ways = $23.60 each. This calculator does it instantly and lets you change the tip percentage and party size.

Should the tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

Customarily the tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total for simplicity — both are acceptable. If you want to tip on the pre-tax figure, enter that as the bill amount; if it is easier, enter the post-tax total. The per-person split works the same either way.

What does the round-up option do?

It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar so everyone pays a clean, even amount and there is a little extra in the tip. The calculator shows the rounded per-person amount and the small additional total it adds, which is handy for cash payments.

Is a 15%, 18% or 20% tip standard?

In the US, 15% is the lower end for adequate service, 18% is common for good service, and 20% or more rewards great service. Tipping norms vary by country and venue — in many places a service charge is already included, so check the bill before adding more.
