Electricity Cost Calculator
What does it cost to run? Enter an appliance's wattage, how many hours you use it a day, and your electricity rate, and you'll see the cost per day, month and year — plus the energy it uses. Updates as you type.
How it works
kWh per day = (watts ÷ 1000) × hours per day
cost = kWh × your rate per kWh
- Find the wattage on the appliance label, or multiply amps × volts.
- Use your own rate from your bill (per kWh) — rates vary a lot by region and over time.
- Cycling appliances (fridges, AC) run all day but not at full power — estimate average hours at full draw, or use a plug-in energy meter.
An educational estimate of energy cost only. It excludes standing charges, taxes and tariff tiers. Not financial advice.
FAQ
How do I calculate the running cost of an appliance?
Convert the power to kilowatts (watts ÷ 1000), multiply by the hours used to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your electricity rate per kWh. A 100 W device used 5 hours a day uses 0.5 kWh/day; at $0.15/kWh that is about $0.075 a day, or roughly $27 a year.
Where do I find an appliance’s wattage?
Check the label or nameplate on the appliance, its manual, or the manufacturer’s spec. Many devices list watts (W) directly; if it lists amps (A) and volts (V), multiply them (W = A × V). For devices that cycle on and off (fridges, ACs), use an average wattage if you can.
What electricity rate should I use?
Use the rate from your latest electricity bill, in your local currency per kilowatt-hour (kWh). Rates vary widely by region and over time, so entering your own keeps the result accurate. Some bills also add standing charges and taxes this tool does not include.
Why is my fridge or AC more expensive than the wattage suggests?
Appliances that cycle (fridges, freezers, air conditioners, heaters) only draw full power part of the time, but they run around the clock, so their daily kWh can be high. Estimate the average hours at full power, or use a plug-in energy meter for an exact reading.
