Flooring Calculator

How much flooring to buy? Enter your room dimensions, a waste allowance for cuts, and the coverage per box, and you'll get the floor area, the area including waste, the number of boxes to buy, and the cost. Works for tile, laminate, vinyl and hardwood. Updates as you type.

How it works

area = length × width · with waste = area × (1 + waste%)

boxes = ⌈ area-with-waste ÷ coverage-per-box ⌉ · cost = boxes × price

An educational estimate. For odd-shaped rooms, split into rectangles and add them. Always check the product's own coverage and your measurements. Not professional advice.

FAQ

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?

Multiply the room length by the width to get the floor area, then add a waste allowance (usually 5–10%) for cuts and mistakes. Divide that by the coverage per box and round up to whole boxes. For a 12 × 10 ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft per box: 120 → 132 sq ft → 7 boxes.

How much waste should I allow for flooring?

A common allowance is 5–10% for straight rooms, and up to 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with lots of corners and angles. The waste covers off-cuts, mistakes and keeping spares for future repairs. Set the percentage to match your layout.

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide the total area (including waste) by the coverage printed on each box, then round up — you can only buy whole boxes. This calculator does the rounding and shows the boxes and the area each box covers so you can match it to the product you are buying.

Does this work for tile, laminate, vinyl and hardwood?

Yes — it works for any flooring sold by area per box or pack: tile, laminate, vinyl planks, hardwood, engineered wood and carpet tiles. Just enter the coverage stated on the packaging in the same unit (sq ft or m²) as your room dimensions.
