Assets — what you own
Liabilities — what you owe
How to use your net worth
The number itself matters less than its direction over time. Calculate it now, then again every three to six months:
- Use current values — what your home, car and investments are worth today, not what you paid for them.
- Rising net worth means you're building wealth, even if the total is still negative.
- Two levers move it: grow assets (save and invest) or shrink liabilities (pay down debt — the debt payoff calculator shows the fastest way).
This is an educational snapshot, not financial advice. Asset values are estimates and change over time.
FAQ
How is net worth calculated?
Net worth = total assets − total liabilities. Add up everything you own that has value (cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, property, vehicles) and subtract everything you owe (mortgage, car and student loans, credit card balances, other debts). The result is your net worth. It can be positive or negative.
What counts as an asset versus a liability?
Assets are things you own with monetary value: bank balances, investment and retirement accounts, the market value of your home and cars, and any other valuables. Liabilities are debts you owe: your mortgage, loans, credit card balances and any other money owed. Use current market values for assets, not what you paid.
Is a negative net worth bad?
It is common, especially early on — a recent graduate with student loans or a new homeowner with a large mortgage often has a negative or low net worth. What matters is the trend over time. Recalculate every few months; rising net worth means you are building wealth even if the number is still negative today.
Is my data private?
