How long can an Instagram caption be?

Up to 2,200 characters, though only the first ~125 show before the "more" cut-off — so front-load the important words. The counter shows your remaining characters against the 2,200 limit.

Does it count characters or words?

Both, live as you type. Most platforms limit by characters (including spaces and emoji), which is what the limits here are based on, but the word count is handy for readability.

Is my text sent anywhere?
