Time Duration Calculator
Find out how much time is between a start and end time — shown in hours and minutes and as a decimal (handy for timesheets and pay). Subtract a break if you need to, and it handles shifts that run past midnight. Updates as you type.
Tips
- Decimal hours are what most payroll systems use: 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 hours.
- Overnight shifts: tick the box when the end time is earlier in the clock than the start (e.g. 22:00 → 06:00).
- Breaks are subtracted from the total, so you get paid (or billed) hours.
FAQ
How do I calculate hours between two times?
Enter a start and end time and the tool gives the duration in hours and minutes, and as decimal hours. It subtracts any break you enter and handles shifts that cross midnight.
What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour — 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours. Most payroll systems use decimal hours, so the tool shows both formats.
How does it handle overnight shifts?
Tick the overnight box (or simply have the end time earlier than the start) and it adds 24 hours so a 22:00–06:00 shift correctly reads as 8 hours.
Does it subtract breaks?
Yes — enter unpaid break minutes and they are deducted from the total, giving you the paid or billable hours.
