How GPA is calculated
Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Your GPA is the credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by the total credits. A class worth more credits moves your GPA more.
- A = 4.0 · A− = 3.7 · B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B− = 2.7 · C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0
- C− = 1.7 · D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · F = 0.0
Grade scales vary by school. This uses the common US 4.0 scale; check your institution's exact point values if they differ.
FAQ
How is GPA calculated?
Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those up, and divide by the total credits. That credit-weighted average is your GPA.
What is a weighted vs unweighted GPA?
This tool computes a credit-weighted GPA, where courses worth more credits count more. An unweighted GPA treats every course equally; a weighted high-school GPA can also give extra points for honors/AP classes. Check which your school uses.
What grade points does it use?
The common US 4.0 scale: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0. If your school uses different values, adjust accordingly.
Can I add as many courses as I want?
Yes — add or remove course rows freely, and the weighted GPA updates instantly as you change grades or credits.
