Hours Worked Calculator

Enter your start and end time and any unpaid break, and this shows the hours you worked — in hours:minutes and decimal — plus your pay if you add an hourly rate. Handles shifts that run past midnight. Updates as you type.

How it works

worked minutes = (end − start) − break (end before start → +24h)

decimal hours = worked minutes ÷ 60 · pay = decimal hours × rate

An educational estimate for a single shift. Overtime rules and rounding policies vary by employer. Not legal or payroll advice.

FAQ

How do I calculate hours worked from clock-in and clock-out times?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract any unpaid break. From 9:00 to 17:30 is 8.5 hours; take off a 30-minute break and you have 8.0 hours. This calculator does it instantly and converts to decimal hours for payroll.

How do I handle an overnight shift?

Just enter the times as they are — if the end time is earlier than the start time (for example 22:00 to 06:00), the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours, giving 8 hours before the break.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour, which is what payroll systems use: 30 minutes is 0.5, 15 minutes is 0.25, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5. The calculator shows both the hours:minutes and the decimal figure.

Is the break paid or unpaid?

This tool treats the break as unpaid and subtracts it from worked hours, which is the most common arrangement. If your break is paid, set the break to 0 so it is not deducted.
