Sales Tax & VAT Calculator
Add tax to a price or strip it back out of a tax-inclusive total. Enter an amount and a tax rate, choose whether you're adding or removing tax, and see the net price, the tax amount, and the gross total. Works for sales tax, VAT, GST — any percentage rate. Updates as you type.
How it works
- Adding tax: tax = amount × rate, gross = amount + tax. So $100 at 20% → $20 tax, $120 total.
- Removing tax (your figure already includes tax): net = amount ÷ (1 + rate). So $120 that includes 20% → $100 net and $20 tax. Don't just subtract 20% of $120 — that's a common mistake that under-counts the net.
Rates vary by country, state and product. Check the correct rate for your situation — this is a calculation tool, not tax advice.
FAQ
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by the tax rate to get the tax, then add it to the price. For example, $100 at 20% is $20 tax and $120 total. Use the "add tax" mode and the calculator does it for you.
How do I remove tax from a total?
Divide the tax-inclusive amount by (1 + rate). A $120 total that includes 20% tax is $120 ÷ 1.2 = $100 net, so the tax was $20. Don't just subtract 20% of $120 — that under-counts the net. Use the "remove tax" mode for this.
Does this work for VAT and GST?
Yes. VAT, GST and sales tax are all percentage-based, so enter whatever rate applies to you and the math is the same.
Which tax rate should I use?
Rates vary by country, state and product type, so check the correct rate for your situation. This tool does the calculation but is not tax advice.
